Afro Latin Jazz
The Afro Latin Jazz Problem @ MS 246
Now in its tenth academic year, the Afro Latin Jazz Academy of Music (ALJAM) is a year-long residency program dedicated to providing instrument and ensemble instruction to committed students throughout New York City. Under the artistic direction of Arturo O’Farrill, ALJAM supplies instruments and music instruction –including instrumental music and music theory– to students in New York City public schools at no cost to the students, providing them with grammy award winning instructors and top performing musicians, such as lead trumpeter Jim Seeley of the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra.
Using Afro Latin Jazz as an entry point, ALJAM teach the principles of music and the significance of culture in a setting of mutual respect and understanding. The program is sequential and committed to creating ongoing, sustained residencies in schools, after-school programs and community centers.
