The SUNY Downstate Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health utilizes a model of community health empowerment and engagement to promote health equity and social justice through strategic partnerships, innovative community-based health promotion and research programs, and the preparation of a more diverse and inclusive workforce of health professionals.
The Institute Focuses its Efforts on Four Principal Areas:

Targeted health-care service and clinical research programs that advance the understanding, prevention, and treatment of diseases that affect inner-city populations.

Evaluating government policies and practices on the health of Brooklyn's citizens and explore ways to more effectively deliver health-care services, including identifying reasons why people do not seek care.

Urban health education that promotes cultural sensitivity and encourages minority groups members to pursue careers in science, medicine, and other health-care professions.

Communication and collaboration with other health-care organizations and institutions located in the United States, its territories, and countries from which many Brooklyn citizens originate. The institute will convene conferences for the community members and health professionals, producing documentaries, and publishing articles, books, and newsletters.
